Over the next five years, Austria will be investing 280 million euros. The sites will be based in Villach, Linz and Graz.

Vienna, 24.07.2017 – The aim is to pool local expertise in microelectronics and position Austria as a world leader in the field. Villach will conduct research into ‘sensors and sensor systems’ and ‘power electronics’ and will develop efficient sensors and energy-efficient micro-chips. Linz will work in the ‘high frequency’ field, focusing on the secure sending and receipt of large quantities of data. Graz will combine the two topics and focus on ‘system integration’, conducting research into the smooth interaction of various components such as radar sensors, GPS reception and internet connection within a self-driving car. Silicon Austria will begin operation this year and over the coming years, will create up to 500 new top jobs.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, states of Styria, Carinthia and Upper Austria and the Austrian industry are contributing 280 million euros towards the research center. The federal government is providing 70 million euros and the states combined the same sum. The industry will double this contribution over the next 5 years with 140 million euros. In addition, the Ministry of Infrastructure also has accompanying measures in mind: it is investing its finances in research infrastructure, industrial testing laboratories in Vienna, Linz and Graz, open workshops at universities and schools and leading electronics projects as part of its ‘ICT of the Future’ research programme.

Electronics and microelectronics form the basis for digitalisation. They can be found in all aspects of modern life such as car assistance systems, automatic room temperature controls in homes and computer-controlled machines in factories. Around 1/10th of the world’s economic output is directly or indirectly dependent on electronics products. And over 63,000 people currently work in Austria’s electronics industry in over 180 companies, generating a turnover of approx. 80 billion euros.
